December 30, 2018 marked the 23rd anniversary of the murder of Anne Dunlap. A well-known Minneapolis cold case that may be warming up.

Recent advances in DNA technology have given hope to victims and the families of victims across the country.

2018 was an exciting year for several long-term cold cases. With help from genealogists, familial DNA, pheno-typing, Gedmatch.com, and Parabon NanoLabs, detectives across the country have added new tools to their investigative arsenal. Fortunately many COLD CASES from MANY YEARS AGO were SOLVED recently (see below). Many arrested are not the monsters of our imagination (with the exception of John D. Miller perhaps). Some had no police record or just a traffic offense or two. These are the monsters that live among us. They help you carry in your groceries, fix the chain on your kid’s bike. They have little or no record to speak of. They moved on and lived their life without looking back. They got married. They had children. They enjoyed hobbies and activities with friends.

Family and friends of other victims with cold cases wait their turn. They wait for justice that is so long overdue, most believed their loved one’s case would never be solved. I do not believe Anne Dunlap’s perpetrator will get away with selfishly and callously taking her life.

Statement of Prob

1980 California Cold Case: Suzanne Bombardier was 14 years old when she was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. 37 years later (December 2017) DNA matches 63 year-old Mitchell Bacom, an Antioch resident who had previously dated the victim’s sister. Following Suzanne’s murder, Bacom was convicted twice on sex-related crimes and other felonies. He was arrested for her murder December 11, 2017.

1992 Cold Case: Christy Mirack, a 25 year-old teacher was brutally raped and murdered just days before Christmas in 1992. 26 years later in 2018, DNA matched Raymond Rowe, a 49-year-old married father and popular local DJ as her rapist and murderer.

1986 Washington Cold Case: Jennifer Marie Bastian, a 13-year-old girl wanted to ride her bike 30 blocks to the park and then come back home. She never returned. 32 years later in 2018, Familial DNA matched Robert D. Washburn, a 60-year-old single father who is the full-time caretaker for his disabled daughter, as Jennifer’s rapist and murderer.

1986 Washington Cold Case: Michella Welch was a 12 year-old spending the day in Puget Park with her two younger sisters. She went home to get them lunch, returned to the park, and then disappeared. She was found hours later raped and murdered, her neck slashed. 32 years later in 2018, Familial DNA matched Gary Charles Hartman, a 66-year-old married nurse with a clean record as her murderer.

1989 Washington Cold Case: Mandy Stavik, an 18 year-old on Thanksgiving break from her first year in college, went jogging with the family dog. She was kidnapped, raped, and murdered. 28 years later in 2017, DNA matched Timothy Forrest Bass, a 50-year-old bakery delivery driver and former neighbor, as her murderer.

1988 Indiana Cold Case: April Tinsley, an 8 year-old was kidnapped, raped, and murdered while on her way to a friend’s house to get an umbrella. After taunting Tinsley’s family, residents, and police for decades, DNA matched John D. Miller, a 59-year-old former factory work as April’s perpetrator.

1974-1986+ California Cold Case: In 2018 familial DNA matched serial killer and rapist, Joseph James DeAngelo (aka The Golden State Killer, East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker, and Visalia Ransacker), a 72-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, former police officer, and father of three daughters, to at least 12 murders and >50 rapes spanning as far back as 1976.
